The Blackbird’s Shadow: Speculation Surrounding a Potential SR-71 Return to the Skies

  • In late September 2026, reports emerged that NASA has quietly moved one of the last airworthy examples from public display and approached former program personnel about a possible return-to-flight effort.

Combined with cryptic comments from NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman about rebuilding high-speed X-plane capabilities, the developments have fueled widespread discussion about whether the iconic “Habu” could take to the air again.

The Disappearance of Tail Number 844

The focal point is NASA’s SR-71A, Tail No. 844 (originally USAF serial 61-7980).

This airframe holds special significance:

It was the last Blackbird produced and the last to fly, completing its final mission in October 1999 as part of NASA research programs, including the Linear Aerospike SR-71 Experiment (LASRE).

After retirement, it sat on outdoor display at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

Commercial satellite imagery shows the aircraft was removed from its display pole sometime before April or by mid-May 2026 at the latest. Sources indicate it was rolled into a former Space Shuttle hangar for inspection.

NASA has offered no detailed public explanation, stating only that it recognizes interest in the aircraft’s history but has no additional information to share at this time.
