A shared understanding: Billy Joel’s NPH diagnosis and my connection to hydrocephalus
Music legend Billy Joel has recently been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological condition that affects the brain’s ventricles, leading to symptoms such as gait impairment, cognitive deficits, and urinary incontinence.
As someone born with Congenital Hydrocephalus, I can relate to the complexities of living with this condition.
What is Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus?
NPH is a type of hydrocephalus that typically affects older adults, with the average age of onset being around 70 years.
It’s characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain’s ventricles, leading to increased pressure and damage to surrounding brain tissue.
Symptoms can be similar to those of dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or other neurological conditions, making diagnosis challenging [1].
My Personal Connection to Hydrocephalus
Growing up with Congenital Hydrocephalus, I’ve had to navigate the challenges of this condition throughout my life.
Fortunately, I’ve been lucky, requiring only two brain surgeries so far. Despite the ups and downs, music has been a source of comfort and inspiration for me. Billy Joel’s songs, in particular, have been a staple in my life, thanks to my parents introducing me to his music at a young age.
His iconic hits like “Piano Man” and of course, “Uptown Girl” have been the soundtrack to many memories, and it’s surreal to think that someone whose music has brought me so much joy is now dealing with a condition I understand all too well.
